Neighborhood information about Palolo Valley: Palolo Valley is located inland of Kaimuki on the Mauka (mountain) side of Waialae Ave. It’s also nestled between the ridges of St. Louis Heights and Wilhelmina Rise. Because Palolo is a Valley, it is typically really green, especially in the back, where there are a few nurseries. It also offers some of the most affordable residential real estate prices in east Honolulu. There is a public recreation center that has a swimming pool. There’s also several public schools in the valley. The main thoroughfares are Palolo Ave. on the west and 10th Ave. on the east. Both roads meet up in the back of the valley. Unlike other valley neighborhoods in east Honolulu that have one main shopping center (such as Aina Haina and Niu Valley), Palolo has several stand alone commercial shops along both Palolo and 10th Avenues.
The majority of homes in Palolo are older plantation style single wall construction homes zoned R-5. Many of the once larger 15-20,0000 square foot lots have been CPR’d or chopped up into smaller 5,000 square foot lots by developers over the years. Some of the homes are situated on steep topography on some of the slopes. Although some of these can be challenging to access and/or build upon, they often have great ocean views.
