Ala Wai Real Estate
The Ala Wai Canal was dredged and constructed in 1928 as Waikiki was being developed. Since Waikiki was originally marsh land, there needed somewhere for all the water to drain coming down from the inland valleys of Manoa and Palolo. It was since become the buffer or delineation point for Waikiki on the mauka (mountain) side. Most of the Ala Wai Boulevard flows from east to west as a one say street. After you cross McCully Bridge, then Kalakaua Ave., the canal and Ala Wai Boulevard veer to the left. Only once you cross Kalakaua Ave. on the Makai (ocean) side does the road turn back to two lanes.
Most of the real estate along the Ala Wai is made of up condominiums, however there are also some apartment buildings (single owners) and condotels. Entry prices start around $200k +/- for a studio condotel and run as high as a few million dollars at The Watermark.
One of the perks of living on Ala Wai Boulevard is enjoying the views and activity along the canal itself. On a daily basis you can see people paddling their canoes, kayaks and even some rowing skulls can be seen on occasion. There's nearly a dozen local canoe clubs that call the Ala Wai home.
